The Dam, spillway and powerplant were constructed in 1964, followed by the construction of the earthen embankment and the impoundment of water in 1966, filling in March of 1968. The completed power plant began operation in 1969. Toledo Bend is the fifth largest lake in surface acres in the United States. Toledo Bend Lake is 65 miles in length and is the largest reservoir in Texas, also being the largest man-made body of water in the entire South. It is a border lake between the states of Texas and Louisiana. Toledo Bend's sole purposes are for the water supply and the generation of hydroelectric power.
